Hello! Tell us a little about yourself and how you got started in the Design business.

Hi there! I’m Heather, owner of Heather O’Brien Design, specializing in custom wedding stationery. I’ve been designing wedding invitations for almost 6 years now after receiving my BFA in Graphic Design. I just knew that I wanted to share my talent with the wedding industry and design beautiful pieces for brides and their special day!

What advice do you have regarding a Bride's timeline and when should she inquire about custom designs?

Custom invitations do take a little more time than pre-designed invitations due to the nature of everything that is involved. Brides need to start thinking about their wedding invitations at least 6-9 months prior to the wedding. The custom process generally takes between 8-12 weeks depending on the complexity of the suite.

When do you recommend Brides to mail their invitations out?

Save the Dates should be sent out approximately 9-12 months in advance to give your guests notice for planning and accommodations. Invitations should be sent out 8-10 weeks before the wedding day. If the wedding is on a holiday weekend, a destination wedding, or if a majority of guests are from out of town, invitations should go out 12-14 weeks in advance.

What styles are currently trending for invitations? Any favorites?

I would say that right now very simple and classic are in. I have seen more and more brides going for the very classic, minimalist look and the incorporation of calligraphy. Blush and gold are always a timeless combination, and one of my favorites, especially when combined with touches of gold foil!

Do any particular designs from a previous client stand out to you?

Probably one of my favorite designs to work on was for a bride who was having a destination wedding in south Florida. She wanted her suite to mimic the old Florida style with maps and postcards. Being born and raised in Florida myself, this one was very fun! We created a custom map to use on her save the date and then incorporated that same map into her envelope liner for her wedding suite!

Explain exactly what an Invitation suite is.

In the actual wedding invitation suite, there are a number of things that can be included. The staple pieces include the invitation, the response card, the outer envelope and the response envelope. From there you could build up as much or as little as you need. Some options for add on items to a suite are an additional card (generally used for accommodations, reception information, or wedding events), envelope liner, inner envelope, or enclosure (an enclosed piece that can house your invitation and cards before it goes in the envelope), ribbon, belly bands or more! The possibilities really are endless!

Do you offer services with other paper goods designs? If so, tell us more!

Yes, I do! I can design anything paper related to compliment your wedding brand that we’ve established with your wedding invitations so everything can be cohesive. This could be programs, menus, seating chart, place cards, welcome packets and more. I can also create other non-stationery items to match your branding such as napkins, collapsible drink holders, match books, swizzle sticks, coasters, flex cups and more.

Do you have any suggestions on how Brides should preserve their invitations after their big day?

I would say probably the best way would be to frame your invitation. This could also be a cute decoration element to incorporate into your home! You can also keep a complete set in a box in a dry place along with any other special mementos from your wedding day.

How can Brides contact you to set up a design meeting?

I would love to chat with brides about creating a special invitation suite for their wedding day! You can e-mail me at hello@heatherobriendesign.com to get some more information and schedule a one-on-one consultation at my office or over the phone. You can also follow me on Instagram or Facebook.

What is the design process like once a Bride has said YES to Heather O'Brien Design??

Once a bride says yes, the fun can begin! I have a fun questionnaire for the brides to fill out that helps me with all the wording that goes into the invitation suite. Once I have that, I get to work on the initial design of the wedding invitation. When that has been edited, approved and loved by the bride, we move on to all of the other pieces that accompany the suite. After final approval, I get to work on the nitty gritty of professionally printing the pieces and assembling them by hand! Once everything is perfect and ready to go they are packaged and handed over to the bride and it’s time to pop the bubbly!
